چکیده

Avalanche photo-detection is commonly used in applications which require single-photon sensitivity. We examine the limits of using avalanche photodiodes (APD) for characterizing photon statistics at high data rates. To identify the regime of linear APD operation, we employ a ps-pulsed diode laser with variable repetition rates between 0.5 MHz and 80 MHz. We modify the mean optical power of the coherent pulses by applying different levels of wellcalibrated attenuation. The linearity at high repetition rates is limited by the APD dead time and a nonlinear response arises at higher photon-numbers due to multiphoton events. Assuming Poissonian input-light statistics we ascertain the effective mean photon-number of the incident light with high accuracy. Time multiplexed detectors (TMD) allow us to accomplish photon-number resolution by ‘photon chopping’. This detection setup extends the linear response function to higher photon-numbers and statistical methods may be used to compensate for nonlinearity. We investigate this effect, compare it to the single APD case and show the validity of the convolution treatment in the TMD data analysis.

A Comprehensive Performance Analysis of Direct Detection Receivers inWDMASystems

In this work the performance of a wavelength division multiple access (WDMA) system with direct detection receiver is investigated. For this purpose, the probability of error in a WDMA network with OOK modulation considering crosstalk, ISI, photo detector noise and thermal noise is calculated and the effect of each on system performance is investigated. The system performance in presence of PIN...

III-Nitride Based Avalanche Photo Detectors

Research into III-Nitride based avalanche photodiodes (APDs) is motivated by the need for high sensitivity ultraviolet (UV) detectors in numerous civilian and military applications. By designing III-Nitride photodetectors that utilize low-noise impact ionization high internal gain can be realized—GaN APDs operating in Geiger mode can achieve gains exceeding 1×10. Thus with careful design, it be...

Recent technological developments on LGAD and iLGAD detectors for tracking and timing applications

This paper reports the latest technological development on the Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) and introduces a new architecture of these detectors called inverse-LGAD (iLGAD). Both approaches are based on the standard Avalanche Photo Diodes (APD) concept, commonly used in optical and X-ray detection applications, including an internal multiplication of the charge generated by radiation. The...
